Referees under scrutiny - Holland KOed Spain

The World Cup has started. I was hoping the referees would have done their best not to have any influence on the games. This was not the case. The Japanese referee, Yuichi Nishimura, has gifted Brazil a penalty kick that revived them against Croatia. The Croatians were not afraid to attack Brazil but the action of the referee deflated them caused them to lose 1-3 under the guidance of the talented Brazilian conductor, NEYMAR da Silva Santos. My prediction was Brazil 3-0 but I did not expect the referee to help Brazil in their quest to win their sixth World Cup.

In day one we have seen the action of Referee Nishimura who aided the Brazilians. However, in day 2, the Colombian referee, Wilmar Roldan, almost stole the game from Mexico after disallowing 2 clear goals by the magnificent Giovanni Dos Santos of Mexico. Heaven was looking on Mexico and thankfully they have won the game 1-0 against a Cameroonian national team that was completely dominated.

Despite some controversial decisions from some of the referees, the fans of the round ball are being treated to the world’s greatest tournament. Brazil have started in the right path by winning. They are not in full speed but they will get there. Mexico showed that their crisis might be over after dancing the “Jarabe Tapatio,” the Mexican Hat Dance over the Cameroonian of Samuel Eto’o. Chile, on the other hand, have shown to the world that they come to cause major problems in this tournament by beating Australia 3-1. The Chilean, conducted by the talented Alexis Sanchez, plan to create lot of problems for their opponents in Brazil 2014. Somehow, I wonder if the father of Jean Beausejour might have helped the Chileans with some Haitian Voodoo. Voodoo or not, the Chilean national team has achieved its objective by winning its opening game and to earn of the top two spots in Group B for now.

The main story of Day 2 was the demolition of the Spanish National Team by the Dutch National Team. I predicted on twitter that the Netherlands would won the game 2 -1. I did not expect them to demolish Spain 5-1 under the two conductors Robben and Van Persie. One has to wonder what has happened to Spain. It seems that the Spaniards did not come to play the game but they could have been up 2-0 had Silva been able to capitalize on his 1-on-1 opportunity against. I expect Spain to bounce back and we must not forget that Spain had also lost their opening game in South Africa 2010 and they ended up winning the 2010 World Cup. I am not going to blame Casillas since he stopped Robben in the 2010 World Cup but I must say that day 2 was a nightmare for Iker Casillas and for the entire Spanish national team. Iniesta, Xavi and company must show in their second game against Chile. If not, they will need to book their ticket for Madrid.

We will wait to see what Day 3 will bring for us. Here are my predictions for Day 3:

Colombia 2 vs Greece 0
Uruguay 3 vs Costa Rica 0
England 2 vs Italy 1
Ivory Coast 1 vs Japan 0
