Colombia to the Quarter Finals - James, El Rey!

The second game of Day 17 was between Colombia vs. Uruguay. I predicted Colombia to win 2-0 and they have beaten Uruguay 2-0. I have always loved Colombian football. I recall in 1990 I did not go to my engineering course at Nova Southeastern University in Florida so that I could watch the gentleman with the golden hair, Carlos “el Pibe” Valderrama. This was a very good Colombian national team who ended up losing in the knockout round against the Cameroon of Roger Milla.

In 1994, Colombia had one of the best talented side that qualified for the World Cup in the USA. I would never forget that September of 1993 while rushing out a graduate school computer science course at Cornell University in New York to go watch a qualifying game between my beloved Argentina vs. Colombia. That day, I should have stayed in class because Colombia destroyed Argentina 5-0. To make it worse, Argentina lost that game in the Monumental. I was ready to see that Colombian team in USA 1994, unfortunately we knew what happened to Colombia in the game versus the United States and the tragedy that happened to Andres Escobar at home in Colombia.

The team I was waiting in 1994 finally appeared in 2014. I love that Colombian team and since day one I knew there was something special about the young talented James Rodriguez. I don’t have to explain what happened in today’s games. Most of you have seen it. If you did not see what has happened today you can go see it here.

It is in French though, but Football has no language barriers on the pitch, you can see, and you can listen to the excitement in French. Somehow, the young James Rodriguez also recalled me of a talented Juan Roman Riquelme. If you don’t believe me please go see the following.

At that time Riquelme was coached by the strategist Jose Nestor Peterman. Now the young James Rodriguez is being coached by Jose Nestor Peterman. Despite my disagreement with Peterman for substituting Riquelme against Germany in the quarter final game in 2006, I appreciate him because his teams always played attractive football. Today he is doing the same with Colombia and I know deep down Pekerman would like to redeem himself against Germany. His wish may come true. At this time, Colombia and Netherlands are the two teams that are playing total football in this World Cup. Please give me some more Pekerman because he knows how to create geniuses to play football.

And the goal that James Rodriguez scores against Uruguay is somewhat similar to the goal that Maxi Rodriguez scored in 2006 against Mexico for Argentina. You can go see it here. And Pekerman was the coach who enjoyed that goal in 2006 and Perkerman is the same coach who is enjoying now the fantastic goal of James Rodriguez in the 2014 World Cup. For that reason, please give me some Pekerman all the way to the Maracana and I think he will do it this year.

Colombia were too much for Uruguay today. Uruguay without Suarez are not a strong team. Today, the Colombians dominated the game. In the 28th minute, James put a show on with that magical kick to put Colombia 1-0. A goal that will be among all-time best in World Cup history.

The talented sealed the deal for Colombia when he scored their second goal in the 50th minute. Uruguay found themselves in a 0-2 hole; they did try to score but the Colombian goalie was spectacular as well. The game ended 2-0 and Colombia for the first time, they are in the quarter finals in a World Cup.

For Uruguay, they have done their best and it is unfortunate they did not have Suarez.

In terms of prediction, I predicted Colombia to win 2-0 and they did.

Here is my prediction for the second game in Day 18:

Mexico 2 vs. Netherlands 1. Mexico will be focused to get their ticket to the quarter finals for the first time in their history.
