MATCHREPORT

This match was never going to draw many spectators to the Maracana, and now it had no value at all the 27,000 who attended the game was not a disappointing number after all. Both teams had lost their first two matches clearly and had no chance of making the second round. All at stake was consolation and they made the most out of it. Turkish coach Denizli put a few new players into the team to let them have their share in this event. Central defender Alpay was suspended. Karl Rappan on the other side stuck to his favourite team, but had to do without sweeper Alain Geiger who had been injured earlier in the competition, as well as Ramseyer also cautioned twice.

Especially before the break the game was worth watching. The more because both teams scored twice. After 7 minutes already Max Abegglen, who started from the right this time again, finished a fine move by Fatton and Switzerland took the lead. But it wasn't to be long, because 5 minutes later Ümit Davala was exactly in the right spot to benefit from poor defending by Minelli. The Swiss captain hit the ball just at Ümit, who left Sechehaye without a chance: 1-1.

Both coaches had given their teams the freedom of playing the way they wanted and enjoy themselves, to make sure they would keep a little better memory on this All Time World Cup. Chances fell to André "Trello" Abegglen, Kobi Kuhn and Hakan Sükür. Both goalies however had taken their best form with them. Rüstü splendidly kept Abegglen from scoring, Kuhn shot it over the bar and Hakan saw his effort parried by Sechehaye. Still the Swiss goalie had to bow his head when in the 31st minute Hakan met a beautiful cross from Riza in the air and headed it straight into the corner: 2-1 for Turkey, the bronze medalists from World Cup 2002. The same Riza however was again in the spotlights when he fouled André Abegglen from behind just 10 minutes later. Referee Latichev was well positioned and had no troubles taking his decision. The yellow card for Riza, the penalty kick awarded to Switzerland. Jacky Fatton made no mistake: 2-2. That was the result at half-time.

During the break Rappan took off Sechehaye and offered Erwin Ballabio 45 minutes to make an impression. The new man however didn't get much to do. The game faded away totally and both teams were tired to the bone, it seemed. No great moves anymore, no scoring chances and everything pointed to a 2-2 in the end. Then, all of a sudden and 15 minutes before the end, Cemil Turan squeezed through the sleeping Swiss defence and beat Ballabio with a low drive into the far corner. That was the 3-2, more than half of the 27,000 spectators had already left the stadium. Switzerland couldn't find the mental strength to put Turkey under pressure during the last minutes. Both teams had given all they had, ended up without a chance against topcountries like Germany and Argentina, and were lucky to escape without being humiliated. The tournament ended with 3 points for Turkey and 0 for Switzerland.

Next Friday the first match in the round of last 16. In Berne Spain and Uruguay meet. Spain will be without influential captain Camacho who is suspended, and goalkeeper Zamora is battling to get fit from a hand-injury. Uruguay have everyone on deck. A pregnant question is whether coach Lopez will included Petrone or Miguez as centre forward. Petrone is his first choice but Miguez scored twice against Korea. Referee Ivan Eklind will lead the match.
