Prince Dornu-Leiku:
Africa's new big idea
(Apr 19)
My dearest Ghana, Libya, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zambia were among 11 winners who over the weekend negotiated their ways into the 1st Round stage of the African Nations Championship after overcoming 11 other opponents in the preliminary round over two legs. Libya, held.... [Read more]

Review: African Cup of Nations 2008
(Feb 16)
Hello everyone, Prince Dornu-Leiku is my name and I welcome you to my first ever column on this your most distinguished website. I will be writing a lot on African football and in the coming weeks, focus will return to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, the first on African soil. I live.... [Read more]

Paul Marcuccitti:
Here we go ... sort of
(Feb 13)
Since the Asian Cup ended, I've spent some time pondering what an odd period this is in the World Cup cycle. The international football focus in the twelve months between the 2007 and 2008 European off-seasons is mainly on continental championships - CONCACAF and CONMEBOL.... [Read more]

Asian Cup - The knockout matches
(Aug 04)
Before the Asian Cup finals began, many pundits would have told you that the four best teams in the competition would be Australia, Iran, Japan and South Korea. All failed to reach the Final but we didn't know that would happen before the quarter-finals began. So we were treated to two.... [Read more]

Asian Cup - The group stage
(Jul 22)
The problem with the Internet is that it can store an unlimited amount of pages. If you don't agree with me, it's because you're not an occasional columnist who might go to bed at night knowing that, while you're sleeping, people around the world might be reading one of your.... [Read more]

Welcome to the wonderful world of Asia
(Jul 07)
Can you imagine a place where coaches that successfully lead teams to World Cup finals qualification then get sacked for a poor showing in a tournament you've never heard of? A place where a national team might rely on naturalised Africans and South Americans? A place where English.... [Read more]

A month of great memories
(Jun 28)
A few weeks ago, on 2 June to be precise, I scratched my head wondering if I’d forgotten to do something. I was sure the date was important – I must have had some engagement or appointment. Australia was playing Uruguay in a friendly in Sydney that night but it wasn’t that. What.... [Read more]

Gold Cup - Wrapup
(Jun 27)
Jack Warner usually gets what he wants, and what he wanted this time was a USA-Mexico final. But, amazingly, CONCACAF fans also got what they wanted, a thrilling climax to the 2007 Gold Cup. The Big Two delivered a superb match, one of their best ever, and for two hours you could almost.... [Read more]

Gold Cup - Quarterfinals
(Jun 19)
What a pleasure. Not that I have anything against Guatemala, but when one team goes out to create and the other to destroy, you know who to support. Canada brushed aside the chapines with intelligence, imagination, and flair, and right now they look like.... [Read more]

Gold Cup - Group Stage Wrapup
(Jun 15)
That gigantic sigh of relief you heard around 11 PM Central Daylight Time on Wednesday was that of the CONCACAF board of directors when Carlos Batres blew his whistle to end Mexico-Panama, the final game of the Gold Cup group stage. It meant that Mexico had finished second.... [Read more]

Gold Cup - Group Stage Update 2
(Jun 12)
It's hard to conceive of a Group of Death in the Gold Cup, but somehow the committee managed it, putting Panama and Honduras, the two toughest non-seeded teams, in the same group with Mexico. Usually such groups are a waste of everyone's time, with the sides playing.... [Read more]

Gold Cup - Group Stage Update 1
(Jun 10)
The Canadian men's national soccer team needs a nickname. Central Americans have those neat local names like catrachos and cuzcatlecos, and Caribbean sides have jazzy monikers like Soca Warriors and Reggae Boyz. Heck, even Mexico is known as the Tri, and you can call the USA the.... [Read more]

Allocating World Cup slots: Is there a better way?
(Jun 05)
In August (yes, August!), qualification for the 2010 World Cup finals will be underway and, to its credit, FIFA’s Executive Committee resolved the allocation of slots to those finals quickly. In fact, our supreme governing body acted late last year and (can’t believe I’m about to say.... [Read more]
