MATCHREPORT
Neither Brazil nor Holland showed too much interest in the "little final", the match for the 3rd place. Just like expected the match would
develop into a nice game with a lot of skills, but nothing of a fight, nothing of a real match that both teams wanted to win against any price.
Brazil and Holland both fielded something like a 2nd choice team. Still enough by the way, to expect creative football worth watching. But ...
no Pelé for Brazil. No Dunga in midfield, no Didi, no Ronaldo. For Holland Jan van Beveren made place in goal for Hans van Breukelen. Cruijff
sat out, like Van Hanegem, Bakhuys, Wilkes, Neeskens and Israël.
In the first half, Brazil outclassed the Dutch completely. Holland never looked like having recovered from their dramatic semi final loss against
Argentina. Zagalo's men however showed at least a bit of eagerness and most of all they tried to hand Romario the title of topscorer. But the
little man wasn´t lucky to find his opponent Rijkaard in good form. Holland were ready with the tournament and made a lacklustre impression.
Brazil immediately took advance. Ademir skillfully outplayed Jansen and beat Van Breukelen with a low shot. Holland only just realized what
had happened when the 2-0 came. Garrincha, back in the starting line-up, went past Krol and found Zico. His header made it 2-0. Just 10
minutes had gone by. And when Roberto Carlos after 22 minutes hammered in the 3rd after a brilliant move between Gerson and Rivelino, an
enormous disaster threatened Holland.
At that moment however the mentally stronger Dutch players arose. Rather late, but still. Jansen and Wouters now battled the Brazilians in
midfield and the technically brilliant but sometimes a bit soft Brazilians withdrew. Playmaker Van der Kuylen and the strikers now got more
possibilities to show a bit of their class, the first 20 minutes that had been overrun. Most of all outside left Bertus de Harder now came to
work. First he tested Gilmar will a low shot, then he curled around Carlos Alberto and sent a pass to Van Basten, who missed the chance
dreadfully. It was never Van Basten's tournament and it wouldn't be in this match. He couldn't make his low performance from World Cup 1990
forget.
Before the break Holland couldn't change the score, but that would be different in the 2nd half. In the 48rd minute already Gullit was fouled by
Djalma Santos, it was one of Gullit's first good actions. Van der Kuylen put himself behind the ball, it struck the inside of the post before
going in: 3-1. It was the 5th goal of the competition for Van der Kuylen, the surprise joined topscorer. Holland now pushed Brazil back. The
Selecao seemed to think that this was all over, it wasn't. Brazil were in trouble physically as well. Holland however appeared to be rather fit.
Abe Lenstra replaced the injured De Harder and did not need a long time to make his presence felt. He got the ball from Gullit, better into the
match now, outplayed Nilton Santos and shot. Gilmar was surprised, it was 3-2. It was a match again and half an hour earlier it hadn't looked
that way.
The game now went from one end to the other, Gilmar and substitute goalie De Munck got a lot to do. Lenstra as well as Van Basten and
Romario got close, but near the end it was Gerson who decided the game. It was a shot from long range, De Munck seemed to have a chance
but misjudged it: 4-2. Brazil won the match, won the 3rd place medal and they had a legitimate claim, not only from this match but from the
complete tournament as well. Everyone thought that it was pretty harsh on Zagalo's men that they had crashed out against Italy, but it was a
superiour team catching a bad day against a perfectly equipped and motivated opponent. Both teams had played a great tournament, could
live with the outcome of this match but still regretted their missed chance to feauture in the biggest match ever, the final of the All Time World
Cup.
Okay .... 63 matches gone, 230 goals scored, 30 teams out of the competition. Only two have survived. These two play the final of the All Time
World Cup, next Tuesday in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City: Italy and Argentina. Italy welcome Ferri back in defence, he is expected to get
the nod over Collovati though the latter did very well against Brazil. Italy have conceded only 3 goals, 1 from the spot, against strong
opposition: Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Brazil. They scored 16 goals; Piola, Meazza and Riva all scored 3. Nobody expects further
changes in the team: Zoff - Bergomi, Ferri, Baresi and Maldini - Tardelli, Benetti and Mazzola - Meazza, Piola and Riva. Their opponents:
Argentina. A brilliant team in attack, possessing in magical "tridente" Maradona, Di Stefano and Batistuta. Like Italy, Argentina have won all
their 6 matches so far. Impressive goaldifference: 21 goals scored, 8 against. Even more dangerous in attack, more vulnerable defensively.
Ruggeri will be back, Perfumo must take place on the bench. Also here no other substitutions: Fillol - Zanetti, Ruggeri, Passarella and
Marzolini - Burruchaga, Ardiles, Monti and Maradona - Di Stefano and Batistuta. Who will increase their run of winning matches, who will
win the ultimate title in football: All Time World Champion. Germany are depressed not to have made it to the final, but have their ambassador
from the Eastern part: Rudi Glöckner, like in 1970, will lead the World Cup final in Mexico City.
