Spain went out of their own tournament
having won just one of their five matches. Luck took them to the second
phase where England and West Germany proved to be too strong. In the first
round they lost to Northern Ireland, drew 1-1 with Honduras and won 2-1
over Yugoslavia with one of the goals being a gifted penalty by the referee
for a foul 3 yards outside the box.
