Terror attacks might affect WC 2002

It is with great sadness and sorrow that I extend my deepest and sincerest condolences to the victims’ families and to the people of the United States of America.

The sports world is truly affected by these terrorist acts against the United States of America. As soccer fans around the world are deeply saddened by such horrific attacks, we can only hope that justice will be served after reviewing the facts.

For myself, I’ve worked in New York, and I’ve passed through the World Trade center many times. I’ve sometimes boarded the train to the World Trade Center in my way to work; and at times in my way to play in a soccer game at Prospect Park. To see such devastation that trembled the democratic world and the sports world -- One could only ask why? Why such horrible acts committed against thousands and thousands of innocents?

The soccer world strongly condemns these despicable actions that truly anger the American people and allies of the United States of America. The sorrow of the American people and the pain of the victims’ families are unbearable; It is a day of agony and distress; a day where we all think that we are no longer safe in this world, now full of terrorists.

As an avid soccer fan, it was very difficult for me to focus on soccer games this week; I am glad that the sports world are united by cancelling any sort of sports activities. We shall stand firm as a family to condemn any such terrorist actions against the civilized world.

As the 2002 World Cup is approaching, we urge the security forces of the world to do their jobs to prevent any terrorist actions in such united tournament. The civilized world is now affected and shocked by this catastrophic and horrible act launched against the United States America, but we cannot let terrorists take over --- after all, terrorism has no part in the world of sport.

God bless you all!
